This past Wednesday evening the varsity boys bowling team traveled to Essexville to Alert Lanes home of there rival Garber Dukes. Both teams entered the match with only one loss on the season.
This rivalry is a friendly rivalry as both teams push each other not only with talent but friendships made over the years. To say they are evenly matched is an understatement as this always comes down to just a few pins as it did again tonight.
As the first Baker game unfolded towards the final frames key missed spares by the Eagles gave Garber an early lead taking the game 185 to 159. Baker #2 saw the eagles get a little more consistent and take some key points winning 170 to 146.
Things really heated up as the first Peterson started and the nerves were gone. Junior lead off man Alec Martin took over by throwing thunderous strike after strike after strike stringing together his first 10 strikes in a row. Martin stepped up for his 11th shot and pulled the ball just a little and the ball caught some dry boards hooking a touch to much and leaving 3 pins. Martin finished the frame with 2 add on pins posting a new school record single game of 286. His game inspired the team as Nate Bauer fired a 202, Cameron Severs 200 and Hunter Garchow 192. The Eagles took the Baker Game 1007 to 900.
With the Eagles holding a slight 10 to 8 lead going into the last game Cameron Severs took over stringing strikes together along with Zach Schmitzer. The game and match was literally coming down to the final frame with both teams firing strikes. When the dust settled that game went to Garber 910 to 897 the overall score was tied 15 to 15 which then sends it to a tie breaker of overall pins and the Eagles prevailed totaling 92 more pins in the match. Cameron severs finished with a 214 and Zach Schmitzer 191.
Coaches Comments: All the practices and all the grind we go through during the season is for a match like this. Incredible bowling by both teams !!!! They elevate each others games when they face each other. Alec had been struggling for about 2 weeks and I have really pushed him hard in practice, he has worked his way out of it also with the help of coach Brian Waliczek and Justin Severs. His game was exactly what we needed firing up the rest of the team and putting pressure on the Dukes.
Im a stickler for spare shooting though and we still need to improve, we are throwing plenty of strikes. Regionals are only a few weeks away and we have to get better.
All that being said we will take a day or two and enjoy this.
