Frankenmuth captured their first district title in the last three years with a hard-fought, 47-33 victory over the Bearcats. Bridgeport, coming off an upset victory over Birch Run on Wednesday night, played with a tremendous amount of heart throughout the week as they made an improbable run to the championship game. The ‘Muth, though, played with just as much heart and energy, if not more, as they would not be deterred in earning the district crown on their home court.

Both teams shot the ball well early, with each team knocking down shots from the perimeter as the Eagles got out to a 14-11 lead after the first quarter. Junior forward Brooklin Karwat paced the Eagles with 7 points in the opening stanza. Both teams played tighter defense in the next quarter, as each team were only able to muster a single field goal, while the rest of the scoring came from the free throw line. Frankenmuth took a slim 22-18 lead into the half.

The third quarter proved to be the difference maker in this game as the Lady Eagles pressure defense began to take its toll on the Bearcats. Turning their defense into offense, ‘Muth outscored their opponents 11-1 for the quarter to take a big lead heading into the fourth. The margin continued to grow, as Frankenmuth extended the lead to nearly 20 points before the Bearcats narrowed it in the last few minutes.

Brooklin Karwat finished the game with 12 points, while fellow junior Kelynn Kujat also added 12 points, to go along with 8 rebounds and 6 assists in another all-around great game. Freshman Emma Kerkau continued her strong play down the stretch as she chipped in with 8 points. Seniors Claire Breinager and Abby Reinert did a fantastic job in the paint for the Eagles, each collecting 5 boards and playing solid interior defense.

The Lady Eagles advance to the Mt. Morris regional where they will face Central Montcalm, which claimed the Shepherd district title with a win over Alma. The regional semifinals will begin at 5:30 on Monday with Corunna taking on Freeland, with the Eagles playing in the nightcap.
