Defeating a team three times in a season is difficult to do, especially when the first two games were so closely contested. Don’t tell the Lady Eagles that, though. Frankenmuth showed the poise and skill of a championship squad, picking the Bridgeport pressure defense apart. With senior guard Kelynn Kujat (6 assists & 9 rebounds) handling the ball and freshman Lexi Boyke (29 points) and sophomore Zoey Persails (23 points) handling most of the scoring, the Eagles raced out to a big, 41-17 lead at the half. The Eagles added more of the same after the break, stretching the lead up to 40 points in the fourth quarter.
Boyke added 11 boards to go with her career-high in points as she scored both inside and beyond the arc as she took advantage of Bridgeport’s zone defense. Persails did much of the same, knocking down 4 triples and adding 4 rebounds. Sophomore Emma Kerkau chipped in with 4 points and 6 boards and, with Kujat and Sydney Merrihew (4 points), did a fantastic job of keeping Bridgeport’s big three of Ruby Garner, Catarina Juarez, and Destiny Manley all in single digits.
The Eagles now advance to the Owosso regional where they will take on Portland at 7:30 PM on Tuesday night. Freeland and Chesaning square off in the other semifinal contest at 5:30.
