Frankenmuth had an impressive showing in Alma over the weekend with four individuals walking away with All-Conference Honors. The Eagles showed up ready to wrestle at the 16-team “Mega Tournament,” as it’s been called over the years. With teams like #3 ranked, Alma, and #8 ranked, Birch Run, no match was going to be easy. Overall, it was an explosive day filled with emotion and focused determination from all teams.
Chris Mills (160 lbs.) and Konner Roche (145 lbs.) both went undefeated and earned Tri-Valley Conference Championships against state-ranked opponents. Nate Morris took 5th at 119 lbs. and first year wrestler, Tanner Clontz, took 6th at 135 lbs.
Nate Morris started off the day at 119 lbs. against the same opponent he would eventually see in the finals for 5th place. He lost to Jarett Weiglod of Hemlock, 11-2 to start the day, but rallied back strong with wins over Lane Cash of Ithaca, 9-5 and Maddox Retberg of Saginaw MLS, 7-4. He faced Jarett Weiglod once again in the finals, but this time, Weiglod wasn’t able to score a single point on Morris as he soared to a 3-0 victory. Nate Morris finished 5th on the day.
Tanner Clontz wrestled at 135 lbs. and started off the day with a tough loss to Hudson Karst of Swan Valley. Tanner fought his way back through the consolation bracket by defeating Cade Symonds of Ithaca, 3-1, and by pinning Kaitlin Dietrich of Carrollton. He faced a tough opponent for the 5th place match, and was unable to secure the victory. Tanner Clontz finished 6th and captured All-Conference Honors as a first year wrestler.
Konner Roche competed at 145 lbs. He pinned all of his opponents on the day and soared to a 1st place finish in dominating fashion. He pinned his first opponent from Birch Run, Amando Dominguez in the first period. His second opponent was Terry Wentworth of Alma who he pinned in the first period as well. He wrestled #11 state ranked, Gavin Giles of St. Louis in the finals, who he pinned in the second period.
Chris Mills battled at 160 lbs. He defeated all of his opponents, and captured a 1st place finish for the Eagles in what was called the toughest weight in the tournament. Chris defeated his first opponent, Dylan Kuebler of Freeland, 13-3. The match before Chris, Dylan defeated the #15 state-ranked, Jeremy Britton of Valley Lutheran, so he was no easy opponent. Next, Chris had to wrestle #11 state-ranked, Sully O’Brien of Michigan Lutheran Seminary, who he defeated 10-5. #9 Mills then faced off against the #3 , Justin VanBlaricum of Alma, for the 1st place bout. Chris defeated Justin, 7-6 in a high tension match to secure his senior year Conference Championship.
“Today was a great way to end our regular season of wrestling. We won some big matches in the finals, got a win back from earlier in the day, and a first year wrestler earned All-Conference honors. We started off a little slow, but I couldn’t be happier with how we finished. Every single wrestler on this team has come so far in such a short amount of time, and we are right where we want to be going into the post season.”
