The Frankenmuth Eagles were defeated by the Grand Rapids Catholic Central Cougars 48 – 21 at Ford Field in Detroit in the Division 5 State Championship game. Frankenmuth fell behind 14 – 0 early in the 1st quarter on two Cougar TD passes. With two seconds remaining in the 1st quarter, the Eagles broke into the scoring column on a Daniel Barger 4 yard run and Ryan Brenner added the PAT and Frankenmuth trailed 14 – 7 entering the 2nd quarter. The score was set up when Ethan Jacobs stripped GRCC quarterback Joey Silven of the ball and Ashton Benkert recovered at the Cougars 38 yard line. GRCC added two 2nd quarter scores on Silven’s rushing and passing TD’s to take a commanding 28 – 7 lead into halftime. Each team added two 3rd quarter scores with Silven for the Cougars scoring twice on rushing scores. The Eagles two scores was a Devin Reif 7 yard run and a Konnor Roche 4 yard run. The later score was setup on a Cole Lindow’s 70 yard run deep into Cougar’s territory. Nick Holleren added a GRCC score early in the final quarter for the 48 – 21 win. Frankenmuth was outgained 466 to 297 in total yards. The Eagles were led by Lindow’s 101 yards rushing followed by Reif’s 85 yards. Ben Reinert led the defense with 13 tackles and Tyler Rich added 9 tackles. The Eagles ended the season with a 11 – 1 record with a Tri-Valley East Championship, District and Regional Championships and a Division 5 Runnerup finish.
