The Frankenmuth Eagles traveled to play undefeated Almont in a District Final contest and in a thriller defeated the Raiders 28 – 22. On the first play from scrimmage , the Eagles lost a fumble and three plays later the Raiders scored on a 19 yard run and a 6 – 0 Raider lead. On the next possession, the Eagles again lost a fumble, but the Eagle defense made a key stop on a 4th down play deep in Eagle territory. At the 3:55 mark of the opening quarter, Drew Martin intercepted a Raider pass and returned down to the Almont 26 yard line. Three plays later , Alec Yagiela scored on a 6-yard run and Yagiela added the 2-point conversion and the Eagles led 8 – 6. In the 2nd quarter, the two teams exchanged fumble recoveries as Shiloh Kotch recovered for the Eagles. With 3:15 remaining in the opening half , the Raiders scored on a 45-yard TD pass and the 2-pt conversion gave Almont a 14 – 8 halftime lead. On the opening drive of the 2nd half, the Eagle defense forced Almont to punt and the Eagles went on a 16 play – 65 yard drive taking 9:25 of possession time, scoring on the 1st play of the 4th quarter on a Davin Reif 1-yard run. The PAT was missed so the score was knotted at 14 – 14. The Eagle defense again stood tall stopping a Raider drive deep into Eagle territory. Frankenmuth took the lead four plays later on a Yagiela 71-yard run and Derek Humpert’s PAT gave the Eagles a 21 -14 lead with 6:07 remaining. Frankenmuth’s defense forced a Raider punt and the offense drove deep into Almont territory only to turn the ball over on downs. Almont took 5 plays to go 83 yards scoring on a 24 yard TD pass with 1:46 remaining. On the pivotal PAT attempt, the Raiders scored on a run and lead 22 – 21. But the Eagles were not done. They went 68 yards in 6 plays and with 30 seconds remaining, Reif scored from 6-yards and Humpert’s PAT gave the Eagles 28 – 22 lead. Almont attempted one last drive, but Joby Ostrofsky sealed the deal with an interception and a third consecutive District Championship for the Eagles. The Eagle offense tallied 332 yards of offense on 66 plays to the Raiders 328 yards of offense on 41 plays. The Eagles dominated the time of possession 29:54 to 18:06. Yagilea was the leading rusher with 168 yards while Reif gained 98 yards. Ostrofsky and Nate Stone each had 7 tackles. The Eagles will travel to Portland next week for a Regional Championship with the time to be announced.
