Boy Varsity Football, Boys Varsity Football · Eagles Football Begins Action This Week

The MHSAA announced on August 14 that Michigan High School Football was cancelled and a plan to play football in the spring was forthcoming.  This was disappointing news to many players, coaches, parents, and fans throughout the State of Michigan.  On Thursday, September 3, the disappointment where turned to enthusiasm and shouts of joy as the MHSAA announced that football would be back, starting with Junior Varsity and Freshmen games September 17 and Varsity action September 18.

The Eagles schedule was revised with the Varsity beginning action on Friday September 18 against the Freeland Falcons at Freeland.  The newly named Tri-Valley 8 was divided up into two separate divisions  so the teams will have played each other to determine a champion.  The Eagles division will consist of Frankenmuth, Birch Run, Bridgeport, and Essexville-Garber.  The other division will consist of Freeland, Swan Valley, Alma, and Bay City John Glenn.  This means that the game against Freeland will be considered a non-conference game.

The meeting against Freeland will be the 10th meeting between the schools.  The Eagles traveled to Freeland last year and were victories 21 – 7.  Frankenmuth, champions of the Tri-Valley East last season, ended the season with a 9 – 2 record.  The Falcons were 5 -2 in conference play in 2019 and ended the season with a 9 – 3 mark, including a 22-21 District Championship over Ogemaw Heights.

Coach Phil Martin is entering his eight season as the Head Coach and a 68 – 14 record, including seven straight conference championships.  His staff includes Dave Compau, Marcus Cornelius, Brent Lynch, Kyle Bierlein, Jason Farmer, and Jamie Tackabury.  The Junior Varsity coaching staff is Marc Stasik, Logan Raymond, and Nick Szczepanski.  Jerry Drake returns as the Freshmen Head Coach, assisted by Todd Sprowl and Ben Schuler.

The Eagle Freshmen squad will open action Thursday, September 17 at 4:30 on the new turf field followed by the Junior Varsity team after the Freshmen game.  Game recaps will be posted after the games right here at
