Garber High School
Frankenmuth High School
Garber came to Frankenmuth with 1 conference loss and control of first place firmly in hand if they could earn the sweep. The game remained scoreless until the top of the 3rd. A lead off walk, a sacrifice bunt and another walk put runners on first and second with 1 out when Freier induced the Garber hitter into a sharp grounder to short. The feed on the play got away from the Eagle defense and loaded the bases. A fly ball to right field allowed the runner on third to tag up and break the scoreless tie. Back to back infield singles plated 2 more Duke runs and gave them a 3-0 lead before Freier got a strike out to end the inning.
2 walks and a 2 out single in the top of the 4th made it a 4-0 game.
The Eagles put runners in scoring position in both the 4th and 5th inning, but again couldn’t get the big hit. Finally they broke through in the 6th. Danny Mills poked a double over center’s head with one out. Austin Johnson entered the game to run for Mills and Garrett Rezmer walked. Nick Hartman then hit a double to the gap that scored Johnson from second and moved Rezmer to third. The throw home then got away from the catcher and Rezmer was able to score making it a 4-2 game. Kyle Robinson then tried to keep the rally going with a line to left, but the Duke fielder made a sliding catch and a ground out ended the inning. A walk, hit batter, double and sacrifice fly plated 2 more Garber runs and the Eagles could only muster a walk in the bottom of the 7th and dropped game 1 by the score of 6-2.
Seven different Eagles each picked up a hit with Nick Hartman leading the charge going 1-3 with 2 RBI’s.
Zach Freier took the loss throwing 6 tough innings giving up 6 runs, 3 earned walking 7 and striking out 2.
Joby Ostrofsky saw his first action on a varsity mound throwing an inning and giving up no hits, walks or runs.
