|Today at The Fortress Golf Course in Frankenmuth, MI over 150 people assembled for more than just a game of golf. At a commemoration ceremony hosted by Ken Horn, members of the U.S. Navy, Army, Air Force and Marines, representatives of the Frankenmuth Police and Fire Departments, EMS and golfers from 14 area schools paid tribute to the events of September 11, 2001. After a moving speech given by the former State Representative, the Frankenmuth Fire Department remembered the events of that day in chronological order. The ceremony finished with a 21 gun salute from an American Legion Color Guard and the playing of Taps by local bugler, Wayne Pickelmann. The golfers participating in the inaugural Patriot Cup Invitational Tournament played for a perpetual Patriot Cup trophy. The cup was won by the Davison Girl’s Golf Team with a score of 333. Flushing High School took second place with 373 and Kearsley High School took 3 place with 385. Other high schools in attendance were Mt Pleasant, Muskegon Catholic, Saginaw Heritage, Garber, Midland, Nouvel Catholic Central, Frankenmuth, Bay City Western, John Glenn, Clio, and Chesaning.
An unexpected highlight of the day was a hole in one on the par 3 hole #12. The shot was struck by Bay City John Glenn’s Shelby Sullivan. The tournament rules official for the day was Golf Association of Michigan’s, Mick Kildea, who was watching the shot from the next hole over.
The day finished with a much needed Zehnder’s buffet lunch and an award ceremony. Greg Rummel of The Emil Rummel Insurance Agency presented Davison High School with the Patriot Cup trophy. The Rummel Agency is the Team Sponsor of the Frankenmuth Girl’s Golf Team this year. All of the Davison golfers on the winning team along with Coach Darci Stocker will have their names engraved on the trophy and will keep the cup for a year and will have to opportunity to defend their championship at next year’s Patriot Cup.
