Game Recap
For the second time in three games Frankenmuth’s boys soccer team dominated every offensive statistic yet lost the game as the Eagles fell to the Valley Lutheran Chargers 3-1 on Thursday. Despite outshooting their opponents 12-4 and taking 12 corner kicks to only 1 for the Valley Lutheran, Frankenmuth was unable to convert its domination of possession into goals. “This one was frustrating.”, noted Eagle coach John Ayala. “We came out flat and were not ready to play. Valley got an early goal, and it was all uphill from there. We only gave up 4 shots on goal the entire game, yet they converted on three of them. We’ve still got some work to do.”
Valley Lutheran wasted little time getting on the board as just 1:30 into the contest, Ryan Weiss beat Eagle keeper Evan Kellom to give the Chargers a 1-0 lead. Frankenmuth controlled the ball for much of the half but was prone to defensive breakdowns on Valley’s quick counterattacks, and in the 21st minute, Matt Weiss went far post on a breakaway, giving the Chargers a 2-0 halftime lead.
Frankenmuth’s frustrations continued in the second half as they repeatedly worked the ball near the Valley Lutheran goal, but were unable to put it in the net. The Eagles finally drew within a goal when Denver Bonkowski fired a beautiful cross to Jimmy Johnson whose header found paydirt with just over 20 minutes remaining, making the score 2-1.
But that was to be the only score for Frankenmuth, and Valley Lutheran iced the game on a perfectly executed free kick from David Becker with 8:32 to play. Becker lined up just outside the 18-yard box and bent a beautiful shot just over the heads of the Frankenmuth wall and into the top right corner of the net. The loss drops Frankenmuth to 1-2-0 (0-0 TVC East) on the young season, while Valley Lutheran improved their impressive record to 6-0-0. The Frankenmuth Boys Varsity soccer team travels to Caro on Wednesday September 4th to open their conference schedule.
